Natural Grain and Visible Pores

 

A clear pore structure and an intact grain layer are the most fundamental characteristics of genuine cowhide.

To understand leather, one must first understand the term"grain."The grain is the outermost surface of natural leather, often referred to as it"golden protective layer."It is dense, firm, and helps protect the body from external damage, serving as a natural barrier.

Leather with an undamaged grain layer during processing-known as full grain leather-can last well over 10 years.

 

Once the grain has been sanded down during processing-resulting in corrected grain leather-the leather's lifespan is no longer determined by the leather itself, but by the durability of the synthetic resin coating applied on top. As this resin layer ages, the leather will start to crack, peel, or deteriorate within 3 to 5 years.

 

The simplest way to identify genuine leather is by using a magnifying glass to check for visible natural pores.

 

Over 90% of genuine leather sofas on the market are made from corrected grain leather. This is largely because consumers are often unwilling to accept any imperfections or scars on leather surfaces. However, naturally flawless cowhides are rare, so manufacturers must sand and coat the surface to cover any blemishes.

 

In doing so, the leather loses its authentic appearance and becomes an industrialized product.

Consumers need to build a proper understanding and acceptance of minor natural scars that don't affect the durability or aesthetic of the leather. Only then can we enjoy high-quality, full grain leather sofas that offer better value for money.

 

Excellent Breathability

 

Using a special instrument that pumps air into a chamber beneath the leather, air passes through the leather and forms bubbles in the water chamber above. The more bubbles formed, the better the leather's breathability.

 

Car leather seats often feel stuffy and trap heat. To address this, manufacturers perforate the leather. Automotive leather is heavily coated with hardening resins to enhance dynamic friction performance, but this also blocks its natural breathability. Perforation becomes the only way to compensate for that loss.

 

Breathability directly affects the comfort level of a leather sofa after long sitting periods. A well-ventilated sofa helps dissipate heat efficiently, avoiding that sticky, sweaty feeling-even after extended use. Only full grain or nubuck leather can provide such subtle yet important comfort.

 

Skin-like Softness

 

Soft as cotton, smooth as silk-leather with a delicate and refined touch speaks of luxury and elegance, loved by everyone.

Leather with these qualities comes from carefully selected hides, typically from younger cattle under 18 months old. These hides are finer and more supple. In contrast, cattle raised for meat are fattened, which causes their hides to become coarse and loose, making them unsuitable for premium leather goods.

 

But having good raw material isn't enough. It also takes skilled engineers, top-quality chemical agents, and precise processing to fully bring out the soft, refined feel of young calf leather.

 

So if soft, skin-like touch is a natural trait of genuine leather, why does most leather on the market feel stiff and plasticky?

That's because the vast majority is corrected grain leather, heavily coated with synthetic resins. These coatings form a hard film on the surface, masking the original tactile qualities of the leather.
